Older people commonly experience distressing mental health and cognitive problems including depression, anxiety and dementia. These conditions contribute to stress for carers and family members and greatly increase the likelihood of older people’s admission to residential aged care facilities.
Professor Marita McCabe and her team work closely with family, community and residential care providers to develop practical, individually-tailored, evidence-based interventions for people with mental health problems or dementia with the goal of promoting independence and enhancing quality of life. Close attention is paid to organisational and policy frameworks, since better care practices must be adequately resourced and promoted for change to be sustained.
Research team members’ backgrounds in clinical and organisational psychology, psychiatry, health economics and biostatistics – and their close involvement with established aged care providers – bring a wide range of perspectives to bear on research and policy questions.
